Going Green

Saving money is sometimes a lot harder than you would think it would be. It is sometimes hard to keep track of where your money is going, or to spot trends in your spending. There are a number of ways to do that, but the easiest one to date, is Mint.com

Mint.com is a website that links to your bank account and tracks your spending and saving activity. It will make a series of graphs based on the data it collects, and you enter in manually. Using Mint.com you can easily see where large chunks of your money are going every month. You can compare what you are spending on a given item to what others in the United States are spending. Sometimes seeing these trends is enough for you to change your spending habits, but sometimes you may need a little bit more.

Mint.com does that little bit more for you. You go through their page, and make a budget for everything you spend money on monthly. You break your expenses up into categories, and set an amount that you expect to spend. Once youve been on Mint.com for a while they will tell you how much you typically spend on that category to give you an idea. Once you set your budget, you can have Mint.com send you a text whenever you go over your budget on any one given category, or when your banking balance is lower than you want it to get. So, say you are taking your kids school shopping, but need to keep $900 in your account for bills. Mint.com will notify you whenever your budget reaches less than that amount.

The idea of allowing a website access to your online banking information is intimidating, but, Mint.com only has limited access to your account. They have also been heralded in many mainstream publications and their site is secured.

This is the handiest website available right now, and it is a good way to stop the habits that are putting us into debt!
